Elected Member Structure

Council’s elected member representation structure for the 2022 elections is set out below.

The Council will comprise of the Mayor and 11 Councillors, elected as follows:

  • 1 councillor elected by the electors of Wāipa Māori Ward
  • 2 councillors elected by the electors of Pirongia-Kakepuku General Ward
  • 4 councillors elected by the electors of Cambridge General Ward
  • 1 councillor elected by the electors of Maungatautari General Ward
  • 3 councillors elected by the electors of Te Awamutu-Kihikihi General Ward

The Cambridge Community Board will comprise:

  • 4 members elected by the electors of the Cambridge Subdivision
  • 1 member elected by the electors of the Maungatautari Subdivision
  • 1 member appointed to the community board by the Council representing the Cambridge General Ward
  • 1 member appointed to the community board by the Council representing the Maungatautari General Ward

The Te Awamutu and Kihikihi Community Board will comprise:

  • 1 member elected by the electors of the Kakepuku Subdivision
  • 4 members elected by the electors of the Te Awamutu-Kihikihi Subdivision
  • 1 member appointed to the community board by the Council representing the Pirongia-Kakepuku General Ward
  • 1 member appointed to the community board by the Council representing the Te Awamutu-Kihikihi General Ward.

Changes as a result of the 2021 Representation Review

The Local Government Commission’s decision on the Waipā District Council Representation Review can be found here.

This representation structure will also be in place for the 2025 local government elections.

The 2021 Representation review resulted in a change of ward boundaries to reflect the new four ward structure and a reduction in the number of elected members.

Changes to Council

  • Four Councillors for Cambridge Ward and a boundary change in the Fencourt and Hautapu areas;
  • Three Councillors for Te Awamutu and Kihikihi Ward and a small boundary change in the Paterangi/Ngaroto Road area;
  • Two Councillors in the newly combined Pirongia and Kakepuku Ward and boundary changes in the Paterangi/Ngaroto Road and Kaipaki areas;
  • One Councillor for the Maungatautari Ward and a boundary change to extend the ward to include Kaipaki and reflect the changes to the Cambridge Ward boundary.

Changes to Community Boards

  • Te Awamutu Community Board will be renamed the Te Awamutu and Kihikihi Community Board, and will maintain the same number of elected members from the same areas (reflecting the small boundary change in the Paterangi/Ngaroto Road area);
  • Cambridge Community Board will reduce by one member, comprising of four in the Cambridge and one in Maungatautari subdivision. Changes proposed for the ward boundaries will also be reflected in the subdivision boundaries.

The Kakepuku representative on the Te Awamutu & Kihikihi Community Board will come from the current Kakepuku subdivision.
