Hamilton Road Cycleway
Consultation closed, 5pm 30 November
We’re excited to let you know the construction of Cambridge’s first ever dual cycleway will be kicking off on Hamilton Road in March 2021. Once complete, it will stretch from the Victoria Road roundabout out to the Avantidrome.
The project will be undertaken in three stages – the first from the Victoria Street roundabout to Vogel Street. This is expected to take around four months to complete.
Why Hamilton Road?
By 2050, the population of Cambridge is expected to nearly double - that’s a whole lot of residents and a whole lot of cars. On either side of Hamilton Road, we’ve started installing the waters infrastructure for two major housing developments, known as C2 and C3.
They’ll provide for around 3400 new dwellings, a neighbourhood centre and a new primary school. One of the key purposes of this new cycleway is to provide a path for those residents to get into town easily by bike or on foot rather than having to rely on their cars.
We also know creating great spaces for walking and cycling is important to Cambridge residents.
In 2018, as part of the Cambridge Town Concept Plan Refresh over 1,700 people told us improving walking and cycling infrastructure and making Cambridge a better connected town was a top priority.
So here we are! This is a step towards transforming Cambridge into a cycle and pedestrian-friendly town.
This project will run alongside the Streets for People project which also aims to make the streets of Cambridge more pedestrian and cyclist friendly. Read more about this project at www.streetsforpeople.nz
Potential changes to Grey and Hall streets.
As part of this project, we are considering changing the south side of Hall Street and both sides of Grey Street into cul-de-sacs where they meet Hamilton Road.
For the new dual cycleway to work best, we’d like to reduce the number of intersections along it. This would make the new pathway much safer and easier to use for cyclists and pedestrians. Cul-de-sacs are also quieter and safer for children and offer a greater sense of privacy for residents.
Making this change will also allow us to improve the pedestrian crossing on Hamilton Road next to Grey Street for residents.
Let us know what you think!
Before any plans are agreed, we’d like to hear your thoughts.

If it is well supported by the community, we will add these changes into the final design of this cycleway.
