Waipa is proud to host two key sports, rowing and track cycling, as New Zealand becomes the destination for 25,000 people from 100 countries, participating in the World Masters Games 2017.
Around 1,300 athletes will be coming to the 'Home of Champions' to compete at Mighty River Domain on Lake Karāpiro for rowing and at the Avantidrome for track cycling. Plus, their supporters, family and friends will be with them too.
While we’re hosting the action Waipa District Council will also be delivering community events and showcasing Waipa to the world. Here’s what Council have planned:
Starting on Saturday 22 April, Council has organised a week of fun, free fitness activities across the district. ‘Match the Masters’ is about trying something new, being active in our district and getting involved in the world’s largest multi-sport event. From pilates at Victoria Square to aquarobics to cross-fit and so much more! Check out all the events at whatsonwaipa.co.nz
Waipa District Council and Hamilton Waikato Tourism have teamed up to host a stall at Shed 10 on Auckland’s Queens Wharf. Shed 10 is the hub for the games – hosting a drink and food market and a daily programme of entertainment. Waipa and Waikato will be marketed to the thousands of daily national and international visitors.
A street party for the whole family in true Home of Champions style! Friday Finale is a free community event to farewell the World Masters Games athletes and supporters. Alfresco bites food stalls, street entertainers, musicians, face painting, ice cream, glow dancers, fire hoop displays, free ice cream thanks to Fonterra and lots more. The event runs from 4-9pm on Lake Street and the grass area in front of the Town Hall. Check out the Facebook event and share it with your friends!
