Drivers urged to slow down on detour
Reports of poor driver behaviour have been made to Waipa District Council following the start of a major infrastructure project.
Works on the Te Awamutu Water Supply bulk main installation have started on Cambridge road and with it, traffic heading toward Te Awamutu is being detoured down Lamb Street, Roto O Rangi Road and McLarnon Roads.
The detour is in place Monday to Friday, 7am to 6pm, with a traffic management system in place outside of these times. During the detour, traffic heading toward Cambridge is unaffected.
Project manager Martin Mould said the detour is not a chance to speed.
“While we can appreciate the detour does add an average of 5-10 minutes to the journey between Cambridge and Te Awamutu, drivers should be factoring this in and leaving earlier, not trying to make up time through driving fast.”
“The detour is not a racetrack,” Mould adds.
When complete, the bulk water main will connect Pukerimu and Te Awamutu schemes and will reduce supply issues for Te Awamutu and surrounding areas and provide a secure and resilient supply for the overall district network.
This is one of Council’s major investment projects in core infrastructure with an asset lifetime of 100 years. The project has been strongly signalled in recent 10-year-plans.
