Temporary library closure
The Cambridge Library will be temporarily closed for two weeks next month while necessary structural repairs are made to the building.
From Friday December 6 to Thursday 19 December the library will be shut while contractors carry out remedial work on the floor.
Waipa District Council community services manager Sally Sheedy said minor soil movement beneath the building had put pressure on the floor compromising its structure.
“A section of the building foundation sits on top of compacted fill. There has been minimal movement in this fill but enough to put pressure on the floor. The remedial works will repair and strengthen the floor to ensure the building can continue to be used for years to come. There are no safety concerns for those currently using the building.”
Sheedy said the library would be running late night hours in the days leading up to the closure, to provide library users time to borrow items.
“It is really important to us that our library users have time to get to the library and borrow any items they may need. While this closure is inconvenient, the work is unavoidable and necessary to ensure we can continue to use the building well into the future.”
The library will be open from 9am-8pm on Monday 2, 9.30am-8pm on Tuesday 3, and 9.00am-8pm on Wednesday 4 and Thursday 5 December. The library will also be open late on Friday 20 from 9am to 8pm and Saturday 21 December from 9.30-3pm.
Sheedy said a returns desk will be set up in the foyer of the Cambridge Council office at 23 Wilson Street for library users to return their items during the closure.
“While the library is shut, no Cambridge Library items will be due back during any of the closure dates and, there will be a returns desk if they wish to return items.
“We also encourage using the libraries website to place a hold on books which will then be available to collect on Friday 20 December. All holds on items showing as on the Cambridge Library shelves will be free.”
During the closure the libraries eBooks, eAudiobooks and online databases will be available 24/7 for use.
