Time to share thoughts on Cambridge’s parking trial
Enjoying having more time to shop, catch up over coffee and run errands in Cambridge? The 90-minute parking time limit trial in the CBD is six months in, and Waipā District Council wants to hear what you think.
The council is encouraging Cambridge residents, shoppers and business owners to share their feedback on the trial before a decision is made on whether to keep the 90-minute parking time limit in the town centre or return to 60-minute limits.
Transportation Manager Bryan Hudson said the trial was introduced in response to a similar trial underway in Te Awamutu and at the request of the Cambridge Chamber of Commerce, but so far, feedback from the public has been limited.
“To make a well-informed decision on whether to adopt the change or return to the status quo, we need to hear from the Cambridge community,” he said.
The trial, which began on March 13, aims to give people more time to shop, dine and relax while still ensuring parks become readily available.
“There is also an option to extend the trial until the end of the year, so we’d love to hear if there is support for continuing it until December,” Hudson added.
The Cambridge Chamber of Commerce has been actively engaged with council throughout this process and says the changes are already making a positive difference.
“Convenient parking is critical for both customers and business owners. We've heard from several retailers who are receiving positive feedback from their customers - and that’s a win for local businesses,” says Cambridge Chamber of Commerce CEO, Kelly Bouzaid.
“We’re keen to ensure this works well for everyone, so please take a few minutes to share your thoughts with the council.”
The trial is running on:
- Victoria Street (between Alpha and Commerce Streets)
- Duke Street (between Hallys Lane and Anzac Street)
- Empire Street (between Alpha and Duke Streets)
- Commerce Street (between Duke Street and Milicich Place)
A similar trial is currently underway in Te Awamutu’s CBD with 120-minute time limits.
