Share your ideas for Cambridge’s transport future

It’s your turn – help shape the future of Cambridge’s transport network.

Waipā District Council is inviting everyone in the community to share their ideas for Cambridge Connections – Moving Forward Together, the 30-year plan that will guide the town’s transport network for generations to come.

The project already has a Community Reference Group made up of locals with a wide range of perspectives, and an Ideas Forum where people could share further ideas and feedback.

Now the wider community has the chance to join in, with public feedback opening today.

Executive director Katie Mayes said collaboration and community input is at the heart of the project.

“This is your chance to help shape the transport system that Cambridge will use for decades. We want to hear from as many people as possible - whether you walk, cycle, scoot, drive, or use public transport - your experiences and ideas matter.

“We know our community has a wealth of knowledge and experience, and we’re looking forward to hearing your ideas. It’s not just about roads and bridges - it’s about people and places, creating a transport system that reflects the aspirations of Cambridge residents for the next three decades, and keeps our town connected, safe and thriving.”

Members of the Ideas Forum have already shared strong views. Key themes include calling for more travel choices, including frequent buses, safer cycleways, pedestrian-friendly crossings, and long-term planning that supports growth while protecting Cambridge’s green spaces, village feel, and boutique shops. Residents are also vocal on the need for a third bridge, better access to the Expressway, express routes to reduce town centre congestion, and keeping heavy trucks out of central areas.

With Cambridge’s population projected to more than double by 2055, planning transport infrastructure now is essential.

The first stage of public engagement is open until Sunday, October 19 – though there will be plenty more opportunities for you to have your say as the project progresses.
