Have your say on Championing Waipā's Future

Waipā residents are being encouraged to have their say on one of the most significant conversations about local government in a generation.

Mayor Mike Pettit said the Government's proposed local government reforms presented both challenges and opportunities for Waipā, making community feedback critical before any decisions are made.

"Change is coming to local government across New Zealand, and we want to make sure Waipā is helping shape that future rather than having it shaped for us," Mayor Pettit said.

"The Government has invited councils to consider new ways of working together through its Head Start reform pathway. While we don't yet know all the details, we do know the decisions made over the next year could influence how local government operates in our district for decades to come."

Waipā District Council is seeking feedback on a range of possible options, including different unitary authority arrangements and the option of remaining as the district is for now.

Mayor Pettit said no decisions had been made. "This is an opportunity for our community to tell us what matters most to them as we consider the options."

"We're proud to be the Home of Champions. Champions don't sit on the sidelines when important decisions are being made, and they don't rush in without a plan. They take the time to understand the playing field, consider the opportunities and challenges, and make informed decisions."

Council has developed a set of principles to help guide its thinking, including maintaining strong local representation, improving affordability for ratepayers, strengthening regional relationships and ensuring communities are well-positioned for the future.

Mayor Pettit said understanding community priorities would be essential.

"There is no perfect option. Every potential arrangement comes with trade-offs around local voice, representation, affordability and regional coordination. That's why it's so important we hear from the people who live, work and invest in Waipā."

"I encourage everyone to take a look at the information available, consider the options and share their views. Whether you're excited about the possibilities, have concerns, or simply want to make sure Waipā's identity is protected, we want to hear from you."

Feedback is open now and will help inform Council's next steps before any proposal is submitted to the Government by the deadline of August 9.
