Adopt a dog

waipa-animal-control_pound-hounds-rescue.jpgWe manage pounds in Cambridge and Kihikihi but we are not an animal rescue shelter. Most impounded dogs in Waipā are claimed, but sadly there are a few each year who are abandoned by their owners.

While not all of these dogs are suitable for rehoming, we put considerable effort into ensuring the majority are given every chance to be placed with loving and responsible owners. To find forever homes for abandoned dogs, we work with a local charity called Pound Hounds Rescue.

Applying to adopt a dog

Dogs available for adoption from Waipa District Council's pounds can be viewed on the Pound Hounds Rescue Facebook page or by visiting the Animal Control pounds (appointment required).

We try our best to match a dog’s personality and behaviour with an owner who has the lifestyle to match.  Let us know what you are looking for and we will see if we can find a dog to suit you!

Cost of dog adoption

Council offers free registration for any dog adopted from a Waipā pound, until the expiry of the registration year (30 June annually) in which adoption takes place. If your new pet was not microchipped by a previous owner, you will have to pay the microchipping fee.

If a dog has not already been vaccinated and/or desexed, you're also required to pay these costs directly to the vet clinic (at a discounted rate).

In most cases dogs will only be rehomed to owners with a fully fenced dog proof property.

At the time of adoption you will be asked to complete an agreement form which outlines the responsibilities of the new owner and Council following adoption.
