Fire Permits

From Wednesday 25th September 2019, you need to apply for a fire permit using our new online National Fire Permit System accessed from www.checkitsalright.nz .
Our new system is easy to use and will provide you with more visibility and control over your applications and permits. It replaces the previous fire permit application process you used of emailing or calling your local Fire and Emergency NZ office.
You must not light your fire until you have received your fire permit from us.
Where do I go to apply?
Just go to www.checkitsalright.nz.
- Then click on CHECK & APPLY NOW
- Locate your zone using the drop-down menus
- Click on CHECK & APPLY NOW
- Click on the blue section labelled Fire permit – inquire and apply
- Enter the fire location using the address search box or click on the location on the map
- Now follow the instructions to enter the details of your planned fire.

- quickly activate approved fire permits
- apply to renew any expired fire permits or declined/not required fire permit applications.
- Then click on CHECK & APPLY NOW
- Locate your zone using the drop-down menus
- Click on CHECK & APPLY NOW
- Click on Create an Account at the top right.
- Fill in your details as requested.
Note: We are rolling out the new system progressively across the whole of New Zealand by the end of September 2019. Accessing the system will be simplified once all districts are online.
Benefits of using the new National Fire Permit System

What about fire permits I have already applied for?
You don’t need to do anything about existing applications. Any of your applications being assessed by Fire and Emergency before Friday 20 September 2019 will be completed using the existing process. You need to use the new system for all applications you make from Tuesday 24 September 2019 onwards.
Can I renew a permit approved in the old system?
No. You need to apply again using the new system. Once the permit is approved in the new system you will be able to renew it in the future.

Fire safety tips
Here are some tips for keeping a safer fire:
- Supervise fires at all times
- Don't annoy your neighbours with smoke nuisance
- Do not light in windy conditions
- Fire must not be left to burn where there is a chance of spread
- Water and/or other equipment should be kept handy if available
- The fire should be completely extinguished on completion of the burn
