Magpie nesting season is here!

It’s magpie nesting season, and swooping reports are on the rise!

Magpies love Waipā parks and reserves just as much as we do, but during this time of year, they are very territorial and protective of their nests!

They typically call tall trees home, so if you can, take a detour away from areas you know there are nesting birds.

Reduce the chance of being swooped by:

• Walking quickly - but don't run!
• Protecting your head with an umbrella, hat or helmet
• Wearing glasses or sunglasses to keep your eyes safe
• Facing the magpie or its nest as you move away
• Getting off your bike and walking through the magpies' territory.
• Moving in a group, as magpies are more likely to swoop individuals.
