Temporary alcohol ban for Night of Champions

Enjoy your evening out at the races for the Cambridge Night of Champions – but don’t plan to preload on drinks in the carpark.

Waipā District Council at its meeting today agreed to issue a temporary alcohol ban from 3pm to midnight on Friday April 4 for an area around the Cambridge Raceway during the harness racing and concert event, which is billed by organisers as ‘Cambridge’s Biggest Party’.

Cambridge Raceway Ltd requested the temporary alcohol ban in the car parking area for the event, which has been supported by the Licensing Inspector and the NZ Police.

Cambridge Night of Champions is expected to attract around 4000 people, with racing from 5.15pm followed by a live concert and afterparty.

The ban prohibits people from drinking or bringing alcohol into the specified area of the paddock used for car parking east of the raceway track, and on Taylor Street in front of the paddock.

Public notification of the alcohol ban will be undertaken, and appropriate signage will be put up identifying the car parking area where the temporary alcohol ban will apply.

A temporary alcohol ban enables police to remove open alcohol containers within the area, and to exercise search powers as part of enforcing the ban. Anyone knowingly disobeying the ban can be fined or arrested.
