Big win for Waipā events as government funding boost announced
Waipā’s events sector has received a major boost, with $180,000 in Government funding secured for seven major events through the Regional Events Promotion Fund.
Waipā District Mayor Susan O’Regan says the funding will not only help grow these events but also deliver direct benefits for local people, businesses, and the wider Waikato economy.
“This is a big win for Waipā as we continue our focus on creating vibrant and connected communities. These events bring visitors to our towns, they support local jobs, and they give our community something to celebrate and enjoy together.”
Funding secured for Waipā events includes:
- $50,000 – Fieldays
- $25,000 – Night of Champions
- $25,000 – NZMCA Motorhome, Caravan & Leisure Show
- $20,000 – Sika Show
- $30,000 – Summernats NZ
- $20,000 – NZ Boat, Fish and Dive Expo
- $10,000 – National Waka Ama Sprint Championships 2026
“We know events are powerful drivers of wellbeing and economic activity. This successful funding outcome reflects the diversity of events we’re proud to host, from motorsport and water sports to equine events, agricultural showcases like Fieldays, and specialty interest expos.”
O’Regan said the investment would support both long-standing and new events, reinforcing Waipā’s reputation as a destination of choice.
“It’s not just about continuing our flagship events but also expanding into new ones that strengthen our place on the national events calendar.”

O’Regan acknowledged the role of event venues and partners across the district, alongside Council’s own facilities.
“Their continued investment in attracting people to Waipā helps make the district a hub for top-quality events. Together, we’re able to deliver better experiences for all kinds of visitors while boosting local hospitality, accommodation, and retail sectors.”
This is the first time Waipā District Council has received funding from the Regional Events Promotion Fund, which is aimed at stimulating domestic tourism in the regions.
“This investment is a much-appreciated boost for Waipā and will also bring wider benefits across the region,” O’Regan said.
The $2.6 million fund, announced by Minister of Tourism and Hospitality Louise Upston, supports 152 events nationwide, selected for their ability to attract out-of-region visitors, encourage multi-day stays, and boost local economies.
