A new public toilet block is coming to Cambridge’s Hallys Lane to replace the one that has served the community for about 30 years.
Construction is due to start on Tuesday, June 3. To allow for safe construction and provide sufficient safe space for a temporary toilet trailer, 12 to 16 car parks will be unavailable for up to a month.
Community services manager Brad Ward said the existing facility has reached the end of its useful life, resulting in increasing maintenance costs. “This upgrade is part of our commitment to maintain our public amenities, and will help to meet current and future needs,” he said.
The upgraded toilet block will include three unisex cubicles and one fully accessible unit with a changing table. A new accessible carpark will also be added, along with safer pedestrian access.
It will be constructed off-site and craned into position to minimise disruption.
The project includes demolition of the old toilet block, placement of the new unit, and connection to essential services. Additional improvements will include new kerbing, concrete paving, channelling, and updated road markings.
Work will pause during Fieldays from Wednesday, June 11 to Saturday, June 14 so most parking spaces can be temporarily reopened.
Ward encouraged the public to plan ahead. “We ask for the community’s patience and encourage people to use nearby unrestricted parking while the work is underway.”
Please note, the temporary toilets on-site have stairs so are not fully accessible. The nearest accessible public toilet facilities are located at Victoria Square, Queen Street, and Milicich Place off Commerce Street.
