The second of Waipā’s first two pedestrian underpasses have been installed in one of Cambridge’s biggest growth areas this week.
Fourteen large pre-cast concrete underpass units were trucked on to the Cambridge Road-Hamilton Road site on Tuesday for work to get underway.
Project delivery manager Jean de Villiers said the underpass is the final major infrastructure element in the growth project that supports the Bridleways subdivision.
“These new underpasses will connect the new subdivision, Te Awa Lifecare and the cycleway, through to the velodrome,” he said.
Manufactured in Tauranga and delivered in two loads, each unit weighs 32 tonnes and will be carefully craned into place on site. They are being built beneath the new roundabout, creating a safe and accessible crossing point for pedestrians and cyclists.
The underpasses are designed to enhance safety and make it easier for people to move through the area — whether on foot, by bike, or using mobility devices.
Construction of the shared path connecting Te Awa Lifecare, through the underpasses, and on to the Velodrome is set to begin Monday, July 7, weather permitting.
The full roading upgrade, including the roundabout and dual underpasses, is on track for completion in September 2025.
