After four terms and 12 years of dedicated service to the Waipā community, Councillor Andrew Brown is standing down in October and making way for new voices and leadership.
First elected in 2013, Brown was encouraged to run by then-Deputy Mayor Grahame Webber. A proud Te Awamutu local, Brown brought to Council a background in accounting and local business ownership.
During his time on Council, Brown chaired the Finance and Corporate Committee for the majority of his tenure, stepping down from the role earlier this year. Between 2013 and 2019, he also served as the appointed councillor on what is now Te Awamutu and Kihikihi Community Board.
Reflecting on his time in office, Brown highlighted his support for the Local Water Done Well project.
“I’ve really enjoyed being part of the decision to move forward with Waikato Water Done Well. I’ve always strongly supported a joint water delivery model. It’s been a long journey, but I’m pleased to see it progressing,” he said.
He also noted the opening of key community facilities, including the Te Awamutu Library and the Cambridge Pool, as memorable achievements.
“Seeing these projects come to life has been rewarding. At the same time, I’ve always believed that looking after our existing assets is essential to ensure Waipā remains a great place to live and visit,” Brown said.
“And what really stands out was the professionalism of council staff and fellow councillors. I’ve gained a real appreciation for how Council works and the importance of investing in high-quality infrastructure - it’s always more cost-effective in the long run.”
As he prepares to step back, Brown says he’s proud of the work he’s contributed to and feels like it’s time for some new voices.
“There’s no ‘right’ type of person for this role. What we need are people with diverse experiences and backgrounds, fresh perspectives, and a genuine commitment to putting the community first.”
“It’s been an honour to serve Waipā. I’ll miss the people and the staff, but I’m ready to pass the baton and enjoy some personal time and maybe some travel to Canada to visit my son, daughter-in-law and grandson.”
Fellow long-standing Councillor Bruce Thomas is also standing down in October.
