Vandalism stalls work on Church Street bore

Vandalism has delayed progress on the Church Street bore project in Kihikihi by at least another month.

Vehicles belonging to the bore drilling contractors – kept at the nearby water treatment plant in Rolleston Street – have been tampered with repeatedly over recent weeks.

Despite the site being secured with fencing, chains, barbed wire and camera surveillance, hydraulic lines have been cut with both fuel and equipment stolen, causing significant disruption and cost.

Water services manager Karl Pavlovich said the vandalism is costing ratepayers a lot of money.

“The damage is serious – cut lines, stolen tools, you name it. It's frustrating, because time is money. Every day the contractors spend fixing and replacing their gear is a day lost to this critical project to secure water for the town supply. The actions of a few are having an impact on all ratepayers in our community.”

The damage has been reported to the police, with CCTV footage passed on.

Meanwhile, work will continue to find the best spot for a new bore, aiming to tap into the same underground water aquifer that has reliably served Kihikihi for decades.

While the work is underway, Church Street remains closed between Whitmore and Lyon Streets, weekdays from 7.30am to 4.30pm. There is no vehicle access to the church or space centre during the work hours. The footpath is also closed, and pedestrians will be diverted around the intersection.

Work is now expected to be completed early September.
