News Jetstar will begin daily jet services between Hamilton and Christchurch from December 1, 2025, has been heralded as another game changer for the Waipā District.
The new Jetstar service, alongside Air New Zealand’s soon-to-launch Hamilton–Christchurch jet flights, cements Hamilton Airport’s role as a vital regional hub.
Waipā District Council chief executive Steph O’Sullivan said the move is a significant boost for the Waikato economy, supporting jobs, business growth, and improved travel options for the community. The Council is a shareholder of the airport which is viewed as a key strategic asset for the wider region.
“We’ll see more than half a million people moving through the airport each year, creating real opportunities for local businesses, tourism, and connectivity. It’s not just about convenience for travellers – it’s about unlocking economic growth for the whole of the Waikato,” O’Sullivan said.
She acknowledged the work Hamilton Airport had undertaken to prepare for this expansion, including recent investments in terminal upgrades, new jet parking, and the addition of international Jetstar flights earlier this year.
“Shareholders have backed the airport to grow strategically, and these announcements show that confidence is well-placed. Jetstar’s decision to operate here, alongside Air New Zealand, is a strong vote of confidence in the Waikato and in the airport team.”
The new daily Hamilton–Christchurch flights will add more than 100,000 passenger seats each year, with Jetstar operating A320 aircraft on the route.
“This is about building choice and competition, and ultimately, Waikato people and businesses are the winners,” O’Sullivan said.
