Waipā residents are being invited to help shape the future of one of the district’s most popular destinations, Karāpiro Lake Domain.
Waipā District Council has developed a draft Reserve Management Plan and draft Masterplan to guide the domain’s use and set a shared vision for how it is cared for in the years ahead.
Property services manager David Varcoe said it’s now time for the community to have their say.
“Karāpiro Lake Domain is more than just a reserve – it means so much to many people.
“These draft plans are about making sure the domain continues to thrive as a place for everyone. Now we want to hear from the community to make sure we’ve captured what matters most, and help fine-tune the details.”
Community feedback gathered in late 2024 helped shape the draft plans, with 27 responses received from individuals and recreational groups.
Ongoing contributions from a dedicated focus group - including mana whenua representatives, Councillors, Community Board members, lake users, event organisers and neighbouring landowners - also played a key role in shaping the direction of the draft plans.
“This early engagement highlighted how important Lake Karāpiro is to people – and how strongly they feel about protecting its natural character, cultural values and environmental health,” Varcoe said.
Funding for any initiatives will be considered through Council’s and Waikato Regional Council’s Long Term Plans and Annual Plans. Additional public or private funding options will also be explored.
“Some may take time to deliver due to current financial pressures, but we’ll be looking at alternative funding, including partnerships and sponsorships, to help bring community aspirations to life,” Varcoe said.
Reserve Management Plans are required under the Reserves Act 1977. This project supports the Council’s priorities to meet legislative and environmental responsibilities while maintaining existing assets and services.
