Mayor comments on proposed regional local government changes

Waipā Mayor Mike Pettit has responded to the Government’s recent announcement on proposed regional local government changes, emphasising the importance of keeping an eye to the future.

“While yesterday’s announcement signals proposed changes at a regional level, the bigger picture is how we deliver local government in the future and ensure it continues to provide real value to our communities,” Mayor Pettit said.

“It is heartening that at the Mayoral Forum on Monday there was a clear commitment from all Waikato mayors to work cohesively for the betterment of the wider region. I’m aware the Chief Executives have begun some preliminary work in the background on how councils can collaborate more effectively. I will look forward to supporting and advancing this with the Mayoral Forum.”

Mayor Pettit reiterated that Waipā District Council will take the time to understand the details of the Government’s proposals and assess what they may mean locally. “As always, our focus remains on what best serves our communities. We will continue to plan for the future of local government in a constructive, collaborative way with our Waikato colleagues.”

The Government’s consultation on the proposals runs until February 20, 2026. Mayor Pettit encourages everyone in the Waipā District to participate and share their views.
