Give it a fix, not the flick

Waipā locals are invited to roll up their sleeves and rediscover the art of refreshing and fixing their favourite items as Repair Revolution returns to the Cambridge Autumn Festival next month.

Repair Revolution is a series of hands-on events designed to help people repair and reuse the items they already love, keeping them in use and out of landfill for longer.

The events will run as part of the festival from Friday, March 20 to Sunday, March 29.

Waipā District Council waste minimisation advisor, Shelley Wilson, said the series proved popular when it launched at the festival last year, with five events and a carnival day stall attracting over 180 attendees.

“With strong community interest and plenty of positive feedback, we’re building on that momentum with a mix of returning favourites and some brand-new workshops.”

This year’s events include a Kids’ Sewing workshop, a Sip and Sew session, a Kintsugi workshop, Upholstery 101, and an Everyday Fixes workshop.

Each session is led by local experts, giving participants practical skills they can take home and use again, from learning the basics of sewing and restoring furniture, to simple fixes for everyday items.

“Repair Revolution is just one of many initiatives showing how small actions can reduce the amount going to landfill, while also saving money and preserving treasured belongings,” said Wilson.

Waipā District Council facilitates and funds the events through the Central Government’s waste disposal levy, which supports projects that help reduce waste.
