State of Emergency remains for Waipā District as response continues

Waipā District remains in a State of Emergency, and Council, emergency services and partner agencies are continuing to respond to severe weather impacts across the district.

Water

Te Awamutu and Pirongia residents are asked to conserve water, and restrict use to drinking and essential sanitary needs only. Pirongia’s water supply remains reduced following flood damage to the Te Tahi water treatment plant. Water tankers are being arranged and will be deployed if required. Where water is available, it remains safe to drink.

Waipā Mayor Mike Pettit says the focus remains firmly on public safety.

“This is still a fast‑changing situation, and I want to thank residents for the way they are looking out for one another and following the advice being shared,” Mayor Pettit says.

“Please conserve water, avoid unnecessary travel and take extreme care around floodwaters and unstable ground. These conditions are dangerous, and we don’t want to see anyone else hurt.”

Roads

Residents are urged to avoid unnecessary travel, particularly in areas affected by flooding or road closures, and to never drive, walk or swim through floodwaters or attempt to access closed roads.

Landslides

People are asked to stay alert for signs of landslides, which can occur during and after heavy rain, often with little or no warning. Warning signs may include:

• New cracks in the ground, paths or driveways.
• Soil, rocks or debris appearing where it hasn’t before.
• Trees, poles or retaining walls that have noticeably shifted.
• Unusual rumbling sounds during or after heavy rain.

Council and emergency services are continuing to assess impacts to roads, water services and other critical infrastructure. Civil Defence Emergency Management teams are coordinating welfare support and response efforts across the district.

“If you’re worried about family, neighbours or access in your area, please check by phone first where possible,” Mayor Pettit says. “If you have concerns, Council can help arrange welfare checks safely. The most important thing is not to put yourself at risk.”

Civil Defence Centre – evacuation information

If Waipā residents need to evacuate, a Civil Defence Centre has been established at Pirongia Rugby Sports Club, 2 Kane Street, Pirongia. Click to open Google Maps.

• The centre is for people who cannot stay safely at home or with friends or whānau
• Please bring essential items with you, including medication, warm clothing and chargers.
• Follow instructions from emergency services and Civil Defence staff when you arrive.
