Mayor welcomes $100,000 Government boost to Waipā Mayoral Relief Fund

A six-figure commitment from the Government has provided a boost for Waipā communities working to recover, with $100,000 today added to the Waipā Mayoral Relief Fund.

Waipā District Mayor Mike Pettit said the contribution, announced by Emergency Management Minister Mark Mitchell, will make a real difference for residents, farmers and local businesses still feeling the effects of recent severe weather.

“On behalf of Waipā, I want to sincerely thank Minister Mitchell and the Government for their contribution,” Mayor Pettit said. “The extra $100,000 means we can help more people, more quickly, at a time when many are doing it tough. Many people and businesses are still dealing with the financial and emotional impacts of the storm. This funding will help us provide practical assistance to those who need it most.”

The Waipā Mayoral Relief Fund was established following the declaration of a State of Emergency in response to widespread flooding, slips and damage to critical infrastructure across parts of the district. It was started with a $100,000 contribution from Waipā District Council. The fund provides targeted support for people experiencing hardship as a result of the event.

“Recovery doesn’t end when the water recedes,” Mayor Pettit said. “For some, the effects will be felt for months to come. This contribution recognises that reality and helps ease some of that ongoing pressure.”

Mayor Pettit also acknowledged the generosity of the wider community.

“We’ve seen incredible resilience and care across Waipā. From volunteers to donors to neighbouring councils, people have stepped up. This support from central government strengthens that collective effort.”

Applications to the Mayoral Relief Fund remain open, with grants assessed against clear criteria to ensure support reaches those most affected. The additional funds have allowed the maximum amounts to double. Those eligible can now apply for up to $2000 for individuals and $5000 per business.

“Even if you have applied before you can apply again to the new maximum and I encourage anyone who is eligible and needs support to apply.”
