Waipā Mayor welcomes runway boost

Waipā Mayor Mike Pettit says today’s Government announcement of a $6.5 million Regional Infrastructure Fund loan for Hamilton Airport marks a significant step forward for both the Waikato region and New Zealand’s wider aviation network — and strengthens Waipā’s role at the heart of that progress.

The funding, announced by Regional Development Minister Shane Jones, will support an extension of Hamilton Airport’s runway, along with apron and taxiway upgrades. These improvements will allow a wider range of aircraft — including wide‑body jets such as the B787 and A330 — to operate from Hamilton Airport.

Mayor Pettit says the investment lays critical foundations for New Zealand’s long‑term economic resilience.

“This upgrade is of national importance. A more resilient and capable Hamilton Airport gives New Zealand greater flexibility in emergencies, supports the continued movement of people and freight when other airports are disrupted, and provides a viable alternative for larger aircraft. That level of resilience is essential for a modern, high‑performing national transport system.”

Mayor Pettit says the improvements also open the door to wider economic opportunities across the country and the region.

“With strong growth already occurring across Waipā, Hamilton and the wider Waikato, this upgrade expands the platform for future national opportunity. Enhancing Hamilton Airport strengthens freight capacity, supports the advanced manufacturing and agritech sectors New Zealand relies on, and ensures the country can respond more effectively to both economic demand and unexpected events. These are nationally significant advantages.”

Bringing the focus back to the local picture, Mayor Pettit says the benefits will be strongly felt within Waipā.

“This investment reinforces the Hamilton–Waipā corridor as one of New Zealand’s most strategically important growth areas. Our spatial planning work in Northern Waipā and Southern Hamilton clearly demonstrates the scale of what this corridor can deliver for the country.”

He says the upgrade enhances a critical enabling asset for current and future generations.

“Strengthening Hamilton Airport positions Waipā to attract investment, support high‑value employment and play a meaningful role in New Zealand’s long‑term economic success. This is a strong, future‑focused outcome for our district and for the country.”

The $9.8 million project includes:

• Runway extension of up to 255 metres
• Expansion of the terminal apron and taxiway
• Upgrades and relocation of approach lighting

Mayor Pettit acknowledged the long-term advocacy behind the project.

“Hamilton Airport has worked for more than a decade to progress resilience improvements. Their persistence and strategic focus have delivered a nationally aligned, forward‑looking outcome — and that deserves recognition.”
