Waipā District Council has $50,000 available through its Waste Minimisation Community Fund, thanks to Central Government, to support projects that help communities rethink, reduce and reuse waste.
From grassroots initiatives to clever new solutions, anyone with a practical idea that makes a positive difference is encouraged to apply.
Diverting more than 81 percent of their building waste from landfill, local business Queenwood Property set a strong example through its waste minimisation strategy trial at its Leamington development last year.
Founder Curtis McCorquindale said receiving funding last year allowed them to test out a new way of doing things.
"Working alongside local contractors and suppliers, the team carefully sorted and tracked materials, such as timber, bricks and plasterboard, into designated areas.
“Any surplus materials and reusable items were either sold or donated to local community groups and families, and excess unopened products were returned to suppliers or reused on other projects.
McCorquindale said that a key part of the strategy's success was making sure everyone on site understood the system and used the correct bins. “It only works if everyone’s on board, with clear planning and signage in place,” he said.
Waste minimisation advisor Shelley Wilson said the trial had provided valuable insight. “We’re thrilled Queenwood Property took the opportunity to test this approach locally. Not only did it divert significant building waste, it also helped identify practical recommendations that can support future builds across Waipā.
“We’re excited to see what new ideas come through this year that can reduce waste and make a positive impact in Waipā.”
