Waipā mourns the passing of former Mayor Alan Livingston

Waipā District Council is today mourning the passing of former Mayor Alan Livingston, a highly respected leader who leaves a significant legacy.

Mayor Mike Pettit said the news was being received with great sadness across the district.

“It is with a heavy heart that we acknowledge the passing of Alan, a respected leader, friend, and dedicated member of our community. Alan brought integrity, commitment, and a strong focus on the wellbeing of our community throughout his time as Mayor.”

During his four-term tenure as Mayor and two as councillor, Alan was a strong advocate for the community and the environment, helping to shape the direction and identity of Waipā. He then went on to serve two terms on Waikato Regional Council, including one as chair, and held many important environmental appointments including being the Crown-appointed chair of the Waikato River Authority, and chair of the QEII National Trust.

A keen supporter of all things sport, Alan’s leadership and contribution had an enduring impact.

“Alan cared deeply about this community and worked tirelessly to make it a better place for current and future generations. He will be remembered not only for his achievements, but for the relationships he built and the respect he earned. He was a true statesman,” Mayor Mike said.

“On behalf of Council and the wider community, heartfelt condolences are extended to Alan’s wife Janet, his family, friends, and all those who knew and worked with him.”

As a mark of respect, flags at Council offices will be flown at half-mast on the day of Alan’s funeral.
