Autumn is here – leaf the clean up to us

Autumn in Waipā is a stunner — all reds, golds and crunchy underfoot moments. But when those leaves start piling up, they can quickly go from picturesque to problematic.

That’s where Waipā District Council’s annual leaf collection comes in. Kicking off from Tuesday April 28, crews will be working their way through designated streets in Te Awamutu, Cambridge and Kihikihi to help keep things tidy and safe.

Because while fallen leaves look great on trees, on the ground they can clog drains, create slippery roads, and generally make a bit of a mess.

Council’s street cleaning crew from Eco Maintenance will be targeting streets with high leaf fall, clearing berms to keep roads safe and stormwater systems flowing.

If you’re in a collection zone, you can help by raking your leaves onto the grass berm outside your property, close to the kerb, about two days before your scheduled collection.

Transport Manager Bryan Hudson says crews will be out rain or shine — but soggy leaves weigh a ton and can slow things down.

“Please don’t sweep leaves into the street or stormwater drains, as that can cause flooding. And before you put your pile out, remove any sticks or branches to help keep the machinery running smoothly.”

A quick reminder: this service is for autumn leaves from large street trees only. General garden waste, pruning, and lawn clippings won’t be collected — and piles containing those will be left behind.

“Your help makes a big difference in keeping our communities looking their best through autumn,” Hudson says.
