Cambridge youth take the lead on cycleway safety

Our youth are cruising through Cambridge with an important message: ride smart, share the path and look out for each other.

Waipā District Council has partnered with young local cyclists, the Pluck Boyz, and Bicycle Revolution Cambridge to create a playful video promoting the safe use of Cambridge’s cycleway network.

The video follows the group as they ride from the town’s pump track and skate park through to shared pathways and road crossings, highlighting simple do’s and don’ts to help keep everyone safe while enjoying the paths.

The Pluck Boyz, Harry and William, said they were excited to be part of the project and showcase the growing use of cycleways in the area.

“We were stoked to be involved with the video. It’s always cool to see heaps of people getting out on bikes in Cambridge,” Harry said.

Bicycle Revolution Cambridge representative Sarah Ulmer said the project reflected a shared passion for encouraging more people to get out and make the most of the town’s cycling infrastructure.

“It was heaps of fun to film. Everyone involved was there because they genuinely love the awesome network of paths around town and seeing loads of different people use them.”

Transportation manager Bryan Hudson said the video supports the council’s wider investment in cycleways to help create safer, healthier and more connected communities.

“As more people use our paths, it’s important we build good habits around how we ride and share the space.”

Hudson said cycleways should feel safe and enjoyable for all ages and abilities, and encouraging positive behaviour helps create a better experience for the whole community.

“It’s great to see so many young people out using the paths. This video reinforces that while it’s fun, it’s also about being aware of others and sharing the space well so everyone can benefit.”
