Plan adopted for Karāpiro Lake Domain’s future
Rowers, water-skiers, waka ama paddlers and families heading for a swim all have a place in the new Reserve Management Plan and Masterplan for Karāpiro Lake Domain, adopted unanimously today.
The plans were shaped by almost 800 submissions and confirm Karāpiro as a place for everyone, recognising the domain as a premier venue for a range of aquatic sports.
Mayor Mike Pettit thanked the hundreds of people who contributed over the last two years to reach today’s milestone.
“I want to thank everyone who gave their time to help shape this plan. What stood out for me was the respect people showed each other. There were strongly held and differing views, but people listened and considered each other’s positions, and that’s how we reached agreement.
“Karāpiro is one of the jewels in our crown, and I’m confident this plan will work for everyone.”
Ngaati Koroki Kahukura and Ngāti Hauā, as mana whenua, worked directly with Council throughout the review. Council also engaged with Waikato-Tainui and Raukawa in recognition of their Treaty settlement interests and Council’s wider partnership obligations.
At today’s meeting, Linda Te Aho of Ngaati Koroki Kahukura spoke in support of the amendments and the plan’s adoption.
“Ngaati Koroki Kahukura and Ngāti Hauā were there every step of the way in what has been a genuinely collaborative process.
“One of the highlights for us is the chance to explore expanding Te Manawa o Matariki as a river and research centre. There are real opportunities when mana whenua and scientists work alongside Council to address threats to the awa, such as pest species.”
Before adopting the plan, Council approved some final amendments. These included changing the definition of mana whenua in line with submissions and clarifying lease arrangements.
Any projects arising from the plan are not yet funded. People will be able to have their say on them through the Long Term Plan and Annual Plan processes.
