Award entries encouraged
14 May 2015Waipa groups involved in heritage or biodiversity projects are being urged to think about entering the district's bi-ennial awards.
The Waipa heritage and biodiversity awards, which will run for the fourth time this year, aim to raise awareness and celebrate social, cultural and natural heritage in the district. They recognise those who have contributed to the preservation and promotion of Waipa's unique heritage and biodiversity.
Heritage award categories are: restoration and preservation; adaptive reuse and/or design; promotion, access and interpretation; public community service and traditional skills and knowledge.
Biodiversity award categories are: retention, restoration and management of natural features; natural heritage education, natural heritage tourism and public/community service.
The BCD supreme awards are given for the best entries from both categories.
In 2013, 13 heritage award applications were received and six biodiversity. Cambridge's Lauriston Park took top honours in the heritage category with Pirongia's Te Aroaro o Kahu Restoration Society claiming the top biodiversity prize.
Award entries open in July with a prestigious awards night held in October. Individuals, organisations and businesses can enter and posthumous entries will also be accepted.
