Big improvements planned for Kihikihi Dog Pound
28 November 2016
Kihikihi Dog Pound is set to triple in size next year as work begins on an improved facility.
The improvements will involve building a new 140m2 building which will be connected to the existing pound on Havelock Street.
The additional building will allow for a much more secure space, as well as a separate room for micro-chipping dogs, increased working space for staff and a larger area to house the dogs with separate kennels and runs. The existing building will be refurbished as a quarantine and veterinary area.
The project will also include a new vehicle entranceway, segregated area for dangerous dogs, improved fencing and landscaping and building a large bund (mound of soil with planting) to reduce visibility of the site and minimise noise.
For Environmental Services Team Leader Karl Tutty, the extra space will be of huge value and is definitely needed.
We are very stretched for room in our current pound and this additional area will mean we can have a more secure environment for our animals and our staff.
The expansion will mean we can house an additional 8 dogs and while the impounding of animals is our last resort, the new building will mean we can confidently house these animals in a secure, high quality facility.
Construction will begin in mid-February 2017 and is expected to be completed by the end of June 2017.
The pound is one of two servicing Waipa district, the other is in Cambridge. Around 450 dogs are impounded in Waipa every year, the majority returned to their owners or rehomed.
