5 May 2015Three Cambridge roads have been renamed before they are sliced in half by the Waikato Expressway.
Forrest Road, Hannon Road and Watkins Road will all be severed by the Expressway when the Cambridge section is complete by late 2016. Retaining the original name for both ends of the severed roads was expected to cause confusion.
Residents, local iwi and the Cambridge community board were all consulted on the name changes with a number of suggestions received.
Waipa District Council resolved to rename the section north of the Expressway up to Hautapu Road, to Tiaki Place. Tiaki is a Maori name meaning 'to support, take care of, give hospitality to, protect, look out for'.
The section north of the Expressway and north of Hautapu Road will change to Broadmeadows Road. Broadmeadows was the estate between Peake Road and Discombe Road and features strongly in local history.
Please note, these roads names are different to what was recorded after the meeting on Tuesday 5 May. There was a mistake in the initial report, please disregard any information that may contradict the above road names.
Hannon Road south of the Expressway has been renamed Abergeldie Way in recognition of the heritage listed building on the road.
Watkins Road north of the Expressway has been renamed Wells Place. Mervyn Wells was the first Cambridge born Mayor.
Residents on the roads will soon receive a letter explaining the process from here. The NZ Transport Agency will make a contribution to each property owner to help offset costs incurred as a result of the change.
The name changes will be effective from July 1 2015.
