Cambridge roads to be renamed
25 November 2014
Local residents and iwi are being asked to help rename three roads that will be sliced in half by the Cambridge section of the Waikato Expressway.
Forrest Road, Hannon Road and Watkins Road will all be severed by the Expressway by the time the Cambridge section is complete by late 2016. Emergency service have advised that retaining the original name for both ends of the severed roads would cause serious confusion. Given that, the original names will be retained for the southern ends of the roads, but the northern half of each road will be renamed.
Waipa District Council's deputy chief executive David Hall said that the northern ends of each road contain fewer properties than the south, so they would be the ends to be renamed.
We're trying to ensure as few people as possible are inconvenienced. However, by mid 2015, around 50 property owners will officially have a new address and that's going to mean changing documentation ranging from maps to property titles to bank statements.
Council staff would provide as much support as possible to those having to change their addresses and would provide detailed check-lists for property owners to work through, he said.
Residents of all three roads, along with local iwi, have already been asked to begin considering new road names. The Cambridge Community Board will also be given the opportunity to put forward suggestions on behalf of the wider community. Names would also be welcomed from others with an interest in the renaming project.
All suggestions must be provided to the council by late January and will be considered at a meeting soon after when a decision on the new names will be made. The final decision on the new names will be made by elected councillors.
