Community events boosted
2 July 2018
Eleven community events are the first winners from a newly established Community Event Fund.
Waipa District Council established the $30,000 fund to support grass-roots events which help build and celebrate community pride and maximise the district's public places. The fund is in addition to the well-established District Promotion Fund which is aimed at events which drive economic activity.
The first allocations were made from the Community Event Fund last week with most applicants having missed out on District Promotion Fund support. From next year, a separate application process will be advertised and run with event funding based upon local appeal, initiative and leveraging opportunities for district facilities.
The biggest winners from the first allocation were the Stragglers Rod and Custom Car Show, Cambridge Autumn Festival, Cambridge Cycling Festival and Waipa Fun Run which all received $3,000 each. In total $20,000 was allocated with Committee members holding $10,000 for ad hoc community requests.
