Contract awarded for major water upgrade
6 June 2017
Waipa District Council has awarded a $3.4million contract to upgrade the Cambridge water treatment plant.
Spartan Construction, which also completed work on the Te Awamutu reservoir and Te Tahi water treatment plant upgrade, will begin work on the upgrade next month. Work is expected to be completed in March 2018.
Group manager service delivery Barry Bergin said the contract decision was a significant infrastructure project for Cambridge and a big milestone in the Council's push to upgrade and future-proof its water infrastructure across the district.
This is a major step forward for the future of Cambridge. This work will mean we can supply more than enough water to meet the significant growth and development we're experiencing now and in the future.
The new plant will have capacity to supply an additional seven million litres of water per day.
We have enough water in Cambridge - supply is not the issue. The concern has always been the capacity of our treatment plant to treat and supply the water fast enough to keep up with demand. This upgrade will future-proof Cambridge's water supply.
The upgrade follows the construction of a duplicate rising main, a second pipe to supply mains water to Cambridge. That project is worth $500,000 and will be completed in July 2017.
