Council wants driving tests back in Cambridge

Waipa District Council wants practical driving tests reinstated in Cambridge.
For some time aspiring drivers - young and old - have been forced to travel to another centre to sit their practical test.
But the Cambridge Community Board has had enough. At today's full Council meeting the Community Board asked Waipā's elected members to approach the NZ Transport Agency (NZTA) and lobby to get the situation changed.
Waipā mayor Jim Mylchreest and his councillors unanimously backed the request.
"Look, I've raised this issue on behalf of Cambridge a number of times already with NZTA but we seem to be getting nowhere," Mylchreest said.
"I suspect Cambridge is just languishing on a list somewhere along with a whole stack of other smaller centres. So I'm more than happy to take a more formal approach to try and get something moving so that opportunity can be offered locally."
Councillors directed staff to write to NZTA requesting the change and copy that correspondence to Transport Minister Hon Julie Anne Genter and Local Government Minister Hon Nanaia Mahuta.
Local Members of Parliament will also be approached for support.
