Cycleway build set for summer
25 October 2016
Construction of the Te Awamutu to Kihikihi cycleway is set to begin early in 2017.
Waipa District Council has confirmed the work will be tendered before Christmas with the aim of having the trail completed in time for the 2017 school year.
Around $300,000 has been budgeted for the 4km trail. The spend is just part of $1.2 million allocated this financial year for cycleways and walkways linking Te Awamutu with Kihikihi and Pirongia.
Meanwhile, council is also continuing negotiations with Kiwirail, Fonterra and other private landowners to progress the 19km Te Awamutu to Pirongia trail. The cycleway/walkway looks likely to cross a combination of private land, the rail corridor, reserve land and unformed roads.
Over time the council wants to build a network of cycleways aimed at connecting historic places, towns and features of the district.
