Disability work on cards
27 November 2014More than $400,000 may be spent over the next decade to improve access in the Waipa district for people with disabilities.
Proposals to spend $411,000 - just over $100,000 a year for four years - may be included in the council's draft 10-year plan to be formally released for public consultation in early 2015. Councillors are still debating what should and shouldn't be included in the draft plan. Until those discussions are complete, potential rating impacts will be unknown.
Since 2011, Council has worked with people with disabilities to identify and implement projects to improve mobility and disabled access.
Already the council has improved the marking and access on the disabled parking spaces and has an ongoing programme to improve mobility scooter access into the CBD.
In the last three financial years, more than $320,000 has been spent specifically on projects in local towns to help improve individual dependence and mobility.
Should this spending be confirmed, work is likely to include ramp improvements to disabled car parks, and more crossing pedestrian improvements, especially near schools, parks and shops.
