Fund helps build champion events
15 April 2019
Event organisers are being urged to apply for funding to help create successful events in the Waipā district.
Applications open today for the 2019/20 District Promotion Fund with $100,000 available to support events that promote Waipā as an attractive place to live, work, invest in or visit. The Community Event Fund is also open with $30,000 available for grass-roots events to build and celebrate community pride within our towns.
Last year, Waipa District Council formed the Community Event Fund as part of the 10-Year Plan process to ensure town-centric events could also have a chance at funding.
Waipā mayor Jim Mylchreest said the increase in quality events moving to the district each year showcases Waipā as a high-calibre events destination.
"Whether it's road cycling, dragon boat nationals or arts festivals; all of these events have a positive effect on the district and its people. It's fantastic to be able to continue to support regular events in our district, as well as attracting new events each year.
"With the introduction of the Community Event Fund we've recognised the need for support for smaller events as well. We want to help build these up to be champion events, alongside our larger national and international events."
In addition to monetary support, Council offers Waipa Home of Champions equipment as well as guidance through the event planning processes. Event organisers also have access to free event promotion through Waipā's district-wide events calendar whatsonwaipa.co.nz, which boasts an organiser tool-kit, another way Waipā is helping build champion events.
Application forms are available online at waipadc.govt.nz/funding or from Council offices by request. Applications must be received by 5pm, Friday 24 May 2019.
