Heritage funding allocated
7 March 2017
Ten groups have been allocated $35,000 to support heritage initiatives in the Waipa district.
The money comes from Waipa District Council's heritage fund which sets aside $70,000 annually. The fund supports natural heritage projects (for example, wetland restoration), built heritage projects (for example, building restoration) and cultural or archaeological heritage.
Today's Strategic Planning and Policy Committee approved grants for the eighth funding round after recommendations from a working group of councillors Sue Milner, Bruce Thomas and Hazel Barnes plus Nga Iwi Toopu o Waipa representative Poto Davies.
In total, 16 applications for funding were received requesting more than $250,000.
The largest grant of $10,000 went to the Cambridge Bowling Club to help upgrade the club house. Further grants went to Punui River Care ($4,600) for Wharekino wetland restoration, The Olde Creamery ($4,000) for weather-proofing and painting, Gowenbank House ($3,000) for weather-proofing and painting and the Regent Theatre in Te Awamutu ($2,500) for neon sign restoration.
