Heritage funding allocated
15 August 2017
Ten groups have been allocated $35,000 to support heritage initiatives in the Waipa district.
The money comes from Waipa District Council's heritage fund which sets aside $70,000 annually. The fund supports natural heritage projects (for example, wetland restoration), built heritage projects (for example, building restoration) and cultural or archaeological heritage.
Today's Service Delivery Committee approved grants for the ninth funding round after 14 applications were received requesting nearly $160,000.
The largest grant of $7,000 went to the Pirongia Playcentre to help paint a heritage building. Further grants of $5,000 each went towards pest control at Lake Ngāroto, to the Anglican Parish of St Andrews in Cambridge to protect the pipe organ from earthquakes, to the National Wetland Trust to help reintroduce the brown teal and for weed control around Lake Rotongata.
Sanctuary Mountain Maungatautari received $2,000 to assist with camping facilities and $1,500 apiece was provided to the Mangaohoi Stream Care Trust for restorative planting and the Tyer Family Trust to assist with wetland restoration.
Other grants went towards wetland restoration at Lake Milicich and gully fencing to protect restorative planting.
