Heritage projects supported
27 February 2018 Four groups have been allocated $33,000 to support heritage initiatives in the Waipā district.
The money comes from Waipa District Council's heritage fund which sets aside $70,000 annually. The fund supports natural heritage projects (for example, wetland restoration), built heritage projects (for example, building restoration) and cultural or archaeological heritage.
Waipa District Council's Service Delivery Committee approved grants after nine applications were received requesting more than $158,000. Only $36,485 was available to be allocated during this round.
The largest grant of $13,000 went to Bridget Williams Books to support the publication of a second NZ Land Wars book by historian and author Vincent O'Malley. The book will be directly relevant to Waipā schools and will acknowledge Waipa District Council as a contributor.
Maungatautari Ecological Island Trust was granted $10,000 to help with the upgrade of its restoration plan. Further grants of $5,000 each went to the Cambridge Historical Society to assist with the digitisation of the Waikato Independent newspaper, and to J and H Smyth to assist with wetland restoration.
Applications from the Torchbearer Trust, Lower Mangapiko Streamcare Group, Waipa District Council, the Cambridge Repertory Society and Armistice in Cambridge were declined for this round.
Applications for the next funding round are open now and will close on June 30. Updated forms and revised criteria are available now on our website.
