Hey mate, indicate!
Do I indicate, and do I do it right? That's the questions motorists are encouraged to ask themselves during the latest road safety campaign.
A recent survey of Cambridge and Te Awamutu roundabouts showed that nearly half of motorists don't use their indicators, or use them incorrectly.
Waipa district Road Safety Co-ordinator Megan Jolly says it's really important that motorists get it right.
Other drivers need to know your intentions at roundabouts and if we don't indicate, or do it wrong, you're putting yourself, and others at risk of a crash, says Ms Jolly.
The campaign is focused a simple catch phrase Hey mate, indicate' which will be displayed on billboards and electronic signs around the district.
We hope the signs will be a reminder to motorists, and will be a catch phrase that sticks in their minds! It concerns us that our research also shows many people aren't indicating correctly, so checking the rules is important too.
THE RULES:
Turning left at the first exit? Signal left when approaching the roundabout.
Going straight through? Don't signal as you approach the roundabout, signal left as your pass the exit before the one you are taking.
Travelling more than half way around the roundabout? Signal right on approach, then signal left as your pass the exit before the one you are taking.
Other things to be mindful of at roundabouts includes getting into the correct lane, and giving way to all vehicles that will cross your path from the right as you enter the roundabout. Also, watch out for larger vehicles that aren't always able to stay in their own lane.
