'How to' on worm farming coming soon
Ever thought of starting your own worm farm?
Learn all you need to know and get a worm composting kit at one of the two Worm Composting Workshops held by Waipa District Council and Waste Education NZ (WENZ).
Presented by WENZ, the workshops will inform you on how you can reduce your household waste by using your worm farm.
Following on from the Love Food, Hate Waste campaign earlier this year, Council and WENZ are keen to promote waste minimisation in the district.
Tonnes of food is thrown away each year in New Zealand. Worm farming is a fun and environmentally friendly way of avoiding more waste going to landfills, says Bruce Trask, director of Waste Education NZ Ltd.
Around a third of the waste that goes to landfill is organic and could have been fed to worms, thus creating nourishment for more plants. A third less volume in your rubbish bin will save you money too.
The programme is partly subsidised by Council and WENZ and is just $30 to attend.
Each person registered to attend the workshop will get a Vermahut worm bin, a bag of compost, 500 grams of worms and a container of lime. You'll be ready to go by the time the workshop is over.
Workshops are held at the Cambridge Town Hall on Saturday 8 August at 1pm (register by 31 July) and at the Council Chambers in Te Awamutu on Saturday 5 September at 1 pm (register by 28 August). You will learn all you need to know at the workshop which will be around two and a half hours.
To register for the workshop, email info@waipadc.govt.nz, or visit the Council office in Te Awamutu or Cambridge to register over the counter.
If you would like to attend with friends or family members, but only need one worm composting kit between you, you only need to pay the registration once. Please mention how many people will be attending with you when you register.
Numbers are limited to both workshops so register today!
