Grab your helmets, it's time to celebrate!
5 February 2018
The concrete is down, the hills and curves are in place and it's nearly time for the first young riders to hit the track at Te Awamutu's new Pop n' Good Bike Park.
The brand new bike park and upgraded Pioneer Park Playground will officially open on Friday 23 February and to celebrate Waipa District Council is holding a community party.
The event will kick off at 4.30pm with an official blessing of the site and ribbon cutting. Following on from that will be live music, food trucks, free bike safety checks, free face painting and of course, Pop n' Good Popcorn!
Waipa Mayor Jim Mylchreest encourages children and their families to bring their bikes, helmets and picnics and be the first to try out the new bike park and playground.
The playground and bike skills park are fantastic additions to the Selwyn Park area and will fit in perfectly alongside the existing library, Trust Waikato Te Awamutu Events Centre and rose gardens, attracting more people to the area. I know a lot of kids are already counting down the days until it's opening, he said.
Mayor Mylchreest reiterates that the bike park would not be possible without the phenomenally generous contribution from local company Davies Foods - who covered the entire cost of the bike park's construction.
We are blown away by the support of Paul and Donna Davies to create an incredible space for the community in the heart of our town. The Davies started making Pop n' Good Popcorn from their home kitchen just outside of Te Awamutu and it is now New Zealand's largest and favourite popcorn manufacturer; proving we are the Home of Champions - not only in sport, but in business too.
It is great to see the Davies family giving back to their local community.
Everyone is invited to join the blessing of the site and ribbon cutting from 4:30pm, and join in the festivities afterwards which will take place until 7pm.
Waipa District Council also has a children's bike to give away at the event. Stay tuned to Council's Facebook page for details on how you can be in to win.
