9 March 2015Experienced kite flyers will share their secrets and some of their stunning kites with the people of Waipa at two community days later this month.
Northland's Malcolm Hubbert and Rotorua's Ray McCully will be heading to Cambridge and Te Awamutu respectively for the annual Kite Day events.
The kite days, organised by Waipa District Council, have become a regular feature on Waipa's community calendar. Staff and councillors will be at both events to join the fun and discuss the Council's draft 10-Year Plan.
Hubbert is a professional kite flyer and flies kites all over the country, most recently at the Waitangi Day celebrations at Bastion Point in Auckland. He owns a huge variety of stunning kites, ranging in size from two metres to 30 metres across. One of his largest, the Volkeren Stack' may be flying in Cambridge along with many of his sea creature-themed kites.
Cambridge's event will be held at the Cambridge Football Club this Saturday (March 14) beginning at 1pm. The highly anticipated Southern United v WaiBop football match will be held immediately afterwards.
In Te Awamutu, Ray McCully will showcase his collection of kites portraying Maori myths and legends. Te Awamutu's kite day will be at Albert Park on Saturday March 21, beginning at 1pm.
Prizes will be offered for the best kites on both days. Event sponsors include Mitre 10 Mega, Cambridge New World, Bunnings, Pak n Save Te Awamutu, the BNZ and Sport Waikato.
