Majority against Easter Sunday shopping
16 August 2017
Public consultation on Easter Sunday trading has ended with the majority of submissions saying shops should not be allowed to open.
For the last month, Waipa District Council has sought feedback from its community on whether or not Easter Sunday trading should be allowed in the district.
Submissions closed on Monday with 542 submissions received. Of those, 68% said the status quo should stand and shops should stay closed.
Waipa District Council will make a decision on whether or not to allow Easter Sunday trading in October. Already Hauraki, Waikato, Matamata-Piako and Thames-Coromandel District Councils have decided to allow shops in their districts to open on that day. Last month, Hamilton City Council decided shops in the city must remain closed on Easter Sunday.
The October decision will not affect Good Friday or Easter Monday.
