28 January 2015Seatbelts save lives. This is the simple message South Western Waikato Police will be sharing as part of their next road safety campaign.
Police Sergeant Warren Shaw has advised that during February, Police checkpoints will target correct seatbelt and restraint use by both adults and children.
"It's simple seat belts and child restraints save lives. We all know this so let's ensure we all use the appropriate restraint.
All children under 7 years of age are to be in an approved child restraint appropriate for their size and age. Drivers are also responsible for ensuring all passengers under the age of 15 years are restrained.
In the last five years in the Waikato, 72 people who were killed and 84 who were seriously injured were not wearing seatbelts. Research suggests that wearing a seatbelt can reduce your chance of death or serious injury in a crash by up to 40%.
Drivers and passengers need to both take responsibility for buckling up.
