Millions tagged for Waipa roads
4 February 2015More than $267 million is likely to be spent on Waipa's roads and footpaths over the next 10 years.
Of that, $81 million will come from government subsidies with more than $8 million projected to come from property developers.
Waipa District Counci is proposing to spend around $973 million (including all capital works and operating expenses) from 2015 -2025. Of that, more than $200 million in capital expenditure has been set aside for water infrastructure (water, wastewater and stormwater) and $47 million in capital expenditure for community services and facilities.
Much of the work tentatively scheduled for the coming decade will involve upgrades to roads and intersections in and around Cambridge following the opening of the Cambridge section of the Waikato Expressway in 2016. The Expressway is expected to mean less traffic going through Cambridge.
Developing new roads in the rapidly-growing Cambridge north will also be a priority.
The Council is also planning to spend more than $400,000 on upgrading existing footpaths or building new ones. The council's aim, over time, is to provide a footpath along at least one side of each urban road in the district.
More than $400,000 is also tagged to make roads and footpaths easier to use for people with disabilities or those using push-chairs.
The Council has signalled that, with the exception of Smart Road near Cambridge, no money has been allowed over the next decade to seal the remaining 60km of unsealed roads in the district.
All of the council's projected costs are outlined in its draft 10-Year Plan. The plan wil be released in mid-March and will be open for formal public comment until mid-April.
