Netballers likely to be ticketed
2 May 2016
Problem parkers around the Te Awamutu netball courts are on target to be ticketed.
Waipa District Council is fielding complaints from residents on or near Mangahoe and Mangapiko Streets near the courts.
On Saturdays cars have been parking over driveways and on footpaths, making it difficult and dangerous for pedestrians, mobility scooters and cyclists.
Senior enforcement officer Ken Danby has spoken to officials at the Te Awamutu netball centre who are well aware of the problem. Officials have urged players and spectators to be more considerate but with limited success, he said.
We understand some parents and players are juggling multiple commitments and it's not easy. We have tried to warn people repeatedly and were active in that area during the last netball season, asking people to be more aware of where they parked.
Last year, following complaints from residents, council staff issued parking tickets around the netball courts.
It's disappointing to see the same sort of behaviour again this year. But residents have a right to feel safe so it looks like some people are set to receive infringement notices which is a shame.
Council enforcement officers would be targeting the area around the netball courts on Saturday mornings Danby said, hoping to encourage better parking practices.
We'll issue tickets if we need to but we'd rather not. We'd rather people walked just a fraction further and were more considerate of the people who live nearby.
